Book Summary

“Strategic Planning for Love and War – Relationships and Adult Conversations,” written by Jo Lena Johnson and Steven Charles Martin, with musical arrangement by Radio Legend Kevin B. Fleming, offers a very interesting take on adult relationships today and the challenges people face in their quest for their “soul mate,” the “one true love,” even if they are single, dating, married or somewhere in between.

Authors Water, Ice and Soul (self-donned monikers) discuss the ebb and flow of relationships through practical wisdom, praise, poignant language, humor and song.

The fact that “IceWater” are actually a couple in life makes it all the more interesting for the reader. Instead of a dry self help-type book, you get to see what real challenges and difficulties this couple has experienced throughout their relationship, and cannot help feeling surprised at the open way in which they discuss matters – even sensitive issues like cheating, lying to your other half, or even taboo topics like body odors and emissions. The book is complemented by numerous interviews and testimonials from real people about various challenges they have experienced in their relationships and marriages, as well as an remarkable selection of the best R&B music of the past 30 years, provided by Soul, as a musical backdrop for each relationship high and low.

The writers have covered 60 topics in just 190 pages. Examples include a woman who broke off a long-term loving relationship for her mate’s bad breath problem, and a middle-aged woman, described as a cougar, who only wants to have sex with younger men because her sex drive is way too high for men her age to satisfy.  These examples represent an expression of the more extreme, non-average views that are out there, so they are shared.

From dating, sex, marriage, choosing a partner, to dangers in a relationship, healing from a previous relationship and alternative lifestyle choices – celibacy, long-distance relationships and sex with multiple people, everything is in here. The book is about overcoming the weaknesses and real life struggles every day people face. It is permeated by the idea of spirituality, soul connection and guidance to create understanding, to stop battling and to learn how to strategically create relationships worth having.

Communication is a key issue that is explored in the book – communication with your mate even for the most awkward or taboo matters, as well as self-exploration, knowing yourself, your needs and desires, and facing them with honesty in the search for happiness.  The eternal “battle” between the male and the female is also a central focus of the book: the strong, independent male who is expected to take on the role of the provider, versus the sensitive female who seeks love, confirmation and mutuality in the relationship. While both sexes may seemingly look for the same thing, the ways in which they approach it may vary wildly, and this is where challenges in a relationship come up, along with the question of how you make your loved one aware of your needs.

Ultimately, one of the central messages of the book is that, in today’s society, relationships between the two sexes are so much more complicated, as compatibility is sought at so many different levels compared to the past: emotional, psychological, physical/sexual, financial and spiritual. At the end of the day, the success of a relationship very much depends on the couple being “on the same page”: wanting the same things from life at that particular time, seeing eye to eye in their goals and how to accomplish them, and being at a similar stage in their lives. Any relationship that falls outside this spectrum faces a much higher risk of not making it long term.

The couple as “IceWater,” leave the question of what happened to their own relationship open in the end. Perhaps because they themselves are unsure of what the future holds for them? And even though we all love a happy ending, real life seems to be more complex than a fairy tale. From this perspective, “Strategic Planning for Love and War, Relationships and Adult Conversations,” with a musical twist, captures the realities of everyday life in a relationship, the complexities, the anxieties, the dilemmas, the good and the bad moments. And for those who wonder what the future holds for their own relationship, take the message of the book: communicate, be honest, work together towards a deeper connection, respect yourself and your other half, give things time to mature, enjoy one another and hope that this will help you stay together for better or for worse.

Longoria Wows, Music World Listens… And Watches

Known for his outstanding trumpet playing skills, David Longoria is one of the most popular instrumental artists in the world today. His appeal, sparked by his love of Latin rhythms, has ridden the wave of such popular artists as Shakira, Ricky Martin, and Enrique Iglesias while remaining true to his own roots and interests in many different forms of music.
Forging his own combination of Latin, Jazz, and Pop influences, David Longoria has carved a unique path in music. Known as “Longoria Latin”, a music style that has excited fans of many different music genres around the world, David’s influences are as wide ranging as they are unique, a concoction of styles and rhythms that fuse together seamlessly over an incessant beat.
This exciting dance music style which harkens back to the days of Herb Alpert and his classic instrumentals is infused with the relentless rhythms of Shakira and Ricky Martin that appeals to a new generation while reminding us of the exciting dance music beats of the earlier times. In David’s music, you catch glimpses of greats such as Arturo Sandoval and Michael Buble that are mixed with David’s unique talents and presented in a fresh, exciting way.
David’s talents were noticed early in his life, as he began signing along with his Aunt Betty at the tender age of 6 months. His love of music progressed through his early childhood as he played the drums, then clarinet before he discovered his calling to master the trumpet, to which he credits the great Al Hirt for inspiration when David saw him playing on television.
“That moment I knew I wanted to play the trumpet”, says Longoria. “I immediately threw my clarinet down on the couch and said I HAVE to do that!”
David Longoria’s talent extends beyond the trumpet to singing and songwriting. He has crafted literally hundreds of songs for himself and many other popular artists as well. Perhaps David is best known in the US for his Dance/Pop hit, “Deeper Love”, featuring Dance/R&B singer Cece Peniston, which rose to the top of the US Billboard Dance charts as well as topping most of Europe’s similar popular music charts.
David Longoria’s passion for music infuses all his performances and his PBS TV special “Baila!” captures him at the peak of his burgeoning career. Full of life, energy and song, David Longoria conveys his love of Jazz, Latin, and Pop rhythms to his audience through his mastery of the trumpet and forcefulness of his singing. “Baila!”, a 90 minute live music special, filmed in HD presents an exciting, unforgettable show that will appeal to young and the young at heart alike.
David Longoria’s influences are many, even extending to his love of such singing greats as Andrea Bocelli, whose crossover appeal to Pop from his more sophisticated classical roots has had a major effect on David.
“If I had that operatic voice, I would have loved to do some serious opera singing, but it’s just not there!” said David, “But the Latin side of me has the same passion and I express it with my trumpet and my songs. I love to bring romance and sexy back to my own jazzy music.”
Watch for PBS stations in your area as they present “Baila!” starring David Longoria.
